The discipline of family science extends far beyond the ideas of what a family is and how it functions to include issues and challenges that are at the forefront of contemporary discourse, including race, ethnicity, socioeconomic factors, gender, sexuality, LGBTQ issues, religion, special needs, and more.

Cognella Publisher Kassie Graves has partnered with renowned scholar Katherine R. Allen, Ph.D. to develop the Cognella Series on Families and Social Justice, with Dr. Allen serving as advisory editor. The editors are interested in developing academic textbooks that support core curriculum within family-related disciplines with emphasis on issues related to social justice, diversity, and equity. Katherine R. Allen, Ph.D. is Professor Emerita of Human Development and Family Science at Virginia Tech. She conducts research on family diversity, family gerontology, feminist family studies, LGBTQ families, families and technology, and qualitative research methods. A Fellow of the National Council on Family Relations and the Gerontological Society of America, Dr. Allen is widely published and has received numerous awards for teaching, mentoring, and research. She is the recipient of the NCFR Ernest W. Burgess Award for Outstanding Scholarly Achievement in the Study of Families, as well as the inaugural Alexis J. Walker Award for Lifetime Achievement in Feminist Family Studies.

Kassie Graves oversees the Cognella Academic Publishing imprint and leverages her personal knowledge within the fields of social work, human services, and family studies to sign engaging and effective texts within the disciplines. Kassie brings a wealth of expertise to Cognella with over 20 years of experience in the publishing and marketing industries. Prior to joining the team, she served as an associate director, publisher, and acquisitions editor for SAGE Publications and received Editor of the Year awards in 2011 – 2014. She is a recipient of The Counselors for Social Justice ‘Ohana Award from the American Counseling Association.
