Quick Guide: Using LaTeX for Cognella Active Learning

What is LaTeX?

LaTeX is a document preparation (or typesetting) system used for the publication of scientific documents. LaTeX allows the author to focus on the content rather than the appearance of their documents. When writing, the author uses plain text, or markup language, to define complex mathematical expressions or multilingual script as opposed to the formatted text found in “What You See Is What You Get” (WYSIWYG) word processors like Microsoft Word. Should I Be Writing in LaTeX?

If your content contains one or more of the following elements, please consider writing in LaTeX:

  • Subscripts or superscripts
  • Fractions
  • Multilingual script (i.e., Greek characters)
  • Complex mathematical expressions
