Step 1: Choose Your Content

If you’re preparing an anthology, begin by selecting the readings you’d like to include in your book, keeping track of their origin as you go. If you’re not sure where to begin, review your current syllabus and create an outline of the topics you intend to cover in class each week. We’d also be happy to set up a consultation with our digital librarian, who can provide reading suggestions from our library of pre-cleared, low-cost content based on your syllabus and the goals of your book.

If you’re writing an original work that contains third-party excerpts, you may be selecting supporting content as you go. It will be helpful to keep the following tips and guidelines in mind as you work, and you may want to consider using text from the following sources.

How to Use the Cognella Digital Library

Register for a Cognella Connect account here to gain access to the library to browse and preview readings: https://connect.cognella.com/sign-up; or visit https://connect.cognella.com/library to browse content without an account.

Please use your university email address to register. After registering you will receive an email from us letting you know that we have initialized your account. You will also be asked to verify your email address.

Log in and search the library for a topic, title, or author. You can refine your search by discipline, publication type, or year.  Leave out words like “the,” and characters such as “&” and “:” when searching for a specific title.

For exact phrase searches, use quotes around the phrase. Click on the publication year to sort the list by publication date. To truncate a search term, do a keyword search, but remove the ending of the word (no asterisk is needed).

Preview selections in your browser or save to your content lists and share them with collaborators. When you find a reading you’d like to peruse, click the “Preview” button to preview a watermarked version directly in your browser. (Due to publisher restrictions, we can only provide printed copies of an article to authors with a disability. Contact your project editor for more information.)

If logged in, you may add articles to content lists using the “Add to List” button. It may be useful to break content lists up by topic, chapter, or outline, rather than add all readings to one large list. These lists can be edited, rearranged, or deleted as you find and save new content for your project.

Share lists of saved readings with your project editor or co-authors using the copy link button. Anyone with the link can view the list but will need to register an account in order to preview a reading. When in a content list, click on the reading title or S-number (our unique ID number) in order to preview.

Note: Not every article or chapter published by our partners is available for viewing through our digital library interface. If you are interested in using a book chapter or reading published by one of our partners that does not appear in our library, let your project editor know, and they can check on its availability.
