Three Cognella Authors Receive 2022 American Counseling Association National Awards

Edward Neukrug, Eric T. Beeson, and Carl Sheperis recognized for their contributions to the counseling profession

San Diego, CA – April 6, 2022 – Cognella authors Edward Neukrug, Eric T. Beeson, and Carl Sheperis were recently awarded 2022 American Counseling Association (ACA) National Awards. Annually, the ACA recognizes counseling students, counselors in practice, and ACA members who have made extraordinary contributions to the counseling profession.

Edward Neukrug, a prolific author and venerated practitioner within the discipline, received the Thomas Hohenshil National Publication Award, which recognizes an ACA member who has made outstanding contributions to the publication of counseling-related literature. The award is named after Thomas Hohenshil, who has provided significant publishing leadership to the counseling profession.

“I am honored, humbled, and surprised to win this award and even more thrilled because it is named after Tom Hohenshil,” said Neukrug. “I hope to keep publishing so I can continue to meet the high standards that this award sets. Thank you so much for this honor.”

Eric T. Beeson, a licensed professional counselor and a core faculty of The Family Institute at Northwestern University, received the Professional Development Award, which recognizes an ACA member who has developed techniques and systems that have strengthened, expanded, enhanced, improved and/or otherwise has demonstrable benefits to clients.

“Although my name is on the Professional Development Award, the accomplishments that led to it were enriched by many others,” said Beeson. “To all the students, colleagues, peers, mentors, friends, and many others that have partnered with me along the way, I say thank you. Your name is on the award in spirit!”

Carl Sheperis, an experienced counselor educator, administrator, author, editor, researcher, behavioral healthcare professional, and online education expert, received the Carl D. Perkins Government Relations Award. The award honors an ACA member who has made a significant contribution to the counseling profession, or individuals served by the profession, by influencing public policy at the state or national level.

“I am humbled to receive the Carl D. Perkins Government Relations Award from the American Counseling Association,” said Sheperis. “Government relations requires a unified effort by many, and the award is representative of the efforts by counseling advocates across the globe. I am privileged to be recognized out of the many who work tirelessly to advance the counseling profession.”

All ACA Awards recipients will be recognized during the ACA 2022 Conference & Expo during both in-person and virtual events.

“We couldn’t be prouder of Ed, Eric, and Carl for their outstanding contributions to the counseling profession and their recognition from the ACA,” said Cognella Senior Vice President of Editorial and Publisher for Social Work, Counseling, and Human Services Kassie Graves. “It’s our privilege to collaborate with leading professionals in the discipline, and we’re honored to publish their work.”
