Central States Communication Association 2020 Awards

Central States Communication Association 2020 Awards - Cognella Authors

Though the Central States Communication Association annual convention was cancelled this year in light of COVID-19, a number of Cognella authors are still being honored by the CSCA for their incredible contributions to the discipline.

Congratulations to all of our authors who were recognized for their outstanding work!

Hall of Fame Award

Patrice M. Buzzanell, Co-author of the forthcoming textbook Organizations, Organizing, and Communication in the Modern World

This award and membership in the CSCA Hall of Fame is given to those who have contributed to the discipline of communication through meritorious scholarship, teaching/mentoring, participation at conventions, and service to the association.

Melissa Beall Award

Joseph Mazer, Co-author of the forthcoming textbook Research Methods in Social Media

Stephen Hunt, Co-author of the forthcoming textbook Engaged Persuasive Communication

Tiffany R. Wang, Author of the forthcoming textbook Communication Training and Development

The Melissa Beall Award is named after distinguished scholar Melissa Beall and is presented to the contributors to the Top Panel submitted to the Basic Course Interest Group.

Jimmie Manning Award

Jimmie Manning, Author of the forthcoming textbook The Qualitative Coding and Analysis Guide for Communication Research

The Jimmie Manning Award is presented to the top paper in the Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Caucus. Dr. Manning is the ideal namesake for this award as he founded the Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Caucus when he was a graduate student at the University of Kansas. When petitioning to begin the caucus, he and a graduate school colleague had several people refuse to sign the petition based on their personal beliefs – an obstacle that only made him more determined to ensure that the caucus was a success. After re-submitting the petition twice, the caucus was finally approved.

Dr. Manning, then a first-year faculty member, was elected to be the inaugural Chair for the caucus. Since that time, he has served in several other leadership roles for the Central States Communication Association, including the role of Executive Director from 2014-2018. Importantly, Dr. Manning has a considerable scholarly record, has received several awards for teaching and mentoring, and is well-known for service in the discipline.

Amy Aldridge Sanford, Author of From Thought to Action: Developing a Social Justice Orientation

Dawn O. Braithwaite, Co-editor of the forthcoming textbook Thriving as a Communication Graduate Student

The leadership of the Central States Communication Association (CSCA) invites competitive papers, panel discussions, and performance sessions for the 89th Annual Convention in Chicago O’Hare, IL. Members are urged to reflect on the theme of Borders & Breakthroughs. A border is a demarcation—geographic, political, conceptual, linguistic, etc. Borders can be arbitrary or sensible. Borders divide but they also call attention to interrelations and border-crossers. Breakthroughs transcend borders and create new possibilities for inquiring, teaching and learning, relating, and serving.
