Child Welfare and Child Protection: An Introduction (Royse & Griffiths, 2019) Adopted by Kentucky’s Child Welfare Certification Program

Eleven universities in Kentucky select the text for use in undergraduate social work programs

San Diego, CA – July 19, 2021 – Cognella is proud to announce the textbook Child Welfare and Child Protection: An Introduction by David Royse and Austin Griffiths has been adopted by Kentucky’s Public Child Welfare Certification Program (PCWCP). The program, hosted by Kentucky’s Cabinet for Health and Family Services and 11 undergraduate social work programs, has the ultimate goal of better preparing social workers to serve the children and families in the state.

Child Welfare and Child Protection bridges the gap between the academic setting and the training environment, providing readers with a practical toolbox of contemporary research, practitioner-vetted and informed strategies, and ample opportunities to experience and think through a variety of challenging situations and cases likely to be encountered in real life. With an emphasis on practical skill-building, the text prepares readers to face challenges, approach situations professionally, and in doing so, positively impact the lives of vulnerable individuals.

Under the PCWCP, Child Welfare and Child Protection has been selected for course use in Fall 2021 at the following institutions: Brescia University; Campbellsville University; Eastern Kentucky University; Kentucky State University; Morehead State University; Murray State University; Northern Kentucky University; Spalding School of Social Work; University of Kentucky; University of Louisville; and Western Kentucky University.

What reviewers are saying about the book:

“Finally, a text that accurately captures what it is like to work in public child welfare. The content and real-world suggestions could only come from authors who have worked in the field. Forty plus years of practicing, leading, and teaching in child welfare tells me this is the new standard for the universities and/or state child welfare training programs.”
Larry Breitenstein M.S.W., Ph.D., Professor Emeritus, Slippery Rock University, Cofounder of Pennsylvania’s Child Welfare Training Program

“I have had the opportunity to review a copy of this text since it was published. This book is truly in its own category as it covers far and above what most current Introduction to Child Welfare texts do. The case examples and short vignettes capture the depth of experiences that my colleagues in DCFS in Louisiana have expressed to me for so long. The chapter on self-care is poignant and practical and so important for new and veteran child welfare professionals. Students will benefit greatly from the perspectives of Dr. Royse and Dr. Griffiths. These are respected authors and practitioners in the field of child welfare. We have recommended this text to our university partners here in Louisiana.”
Andrew J. Fultz, MSW, LCSW, Louisiana Title IV-E Child Welfare Program Manager, Northwestern State University

“Child Welfare and Child Protection: An Introduction is informative reading that captures real-life scenarios for a better understanding of the characteristics of child welfare.”
