What Cognella Does to Promote Your Book

The Cognella Title Catalog

The Cognella Title Catalog (titles.cognella.com) displays our full selection of titles, complete with images and descriptions of each title and its author(s). Typically, listings also include textbook reviews, links to other Cognella titles by the author(s), and details about supplementary materials for the book (instructors resources or Cognella Active Learning).

The Cognella Title Catalog is the go-to place for instructors in your discipline to learn more about your title, view a sneak preview, request a digital copy, or purchase the text.

Media

Third Party Distribution

Our marketing team will send your title’s information to a number of third-party distributors. Your book will be available through the following sources:

  • Amazon
  • barnesandnoble.com
  • VitalSource
  • RedShelf

Because it can take some time for book information to process and post via third-party distributors, we encourage you to direct friends, colleagues, and associates to the Cognella Title Catalog, where they will always be able to find your title. Additionally, while we strive to have our books listed accurately with online booksellers, errors do occur. If you notice a discrepancy, email us and we’ll work with the distributor to correct the error.

To learn more about key partners, visit our Partnerships page.

Library Availability

All Cognella textbooks are available for purchase by libraries through Ingram, our wholesale distribution partner and one of the largest wholesalers for libraries. We offer a hardcover format with library binding for libraries to purchase. The ISBN for the library-specific version is available within the title listing for the textbook in our online catalog (titles.cognella.com) under the Formats tab.

Foreign Rights Catalog

Foreign rights or translation rights are the right to publish a book in a language other than the original language. Twice annually, we distribute a Foreign Rights Catalog to encourage the sale of translation rights of select Cognella textbooks through global third-party publishers. When the rights are sold, the translations are then created through these publisher partners, rather than directly through Cognella.

The Foreign Rights Catalog features original textbooks that have international appeal and satisfy current market needs. We cannot offer anthologies for translation due to permissions and licensing restrictions.

We send the catalog directly to agents who represent foreign publishers. When an agent, on behalf of a publisher, expresses interest in purchasing the translation rights for a Cognella textbook, our team works with them to agree upon terms and sign a contract.

Royalties for translation rights are based upon an author’s royalty rate with Cognella. They are generally delivered in the form of an advance. When a translation rights contract is signed, the advance is awarded immediately and author royalties will be reflected in their royalty statement summary for the quarter.

If your book is selected for a translation project, we will notify you directly and send you a copy of the translated book when it becomes available. In general, these projects take at least a year to complete.

If you know an agent or publisher who is interested in translating your textbook, or you have questions related to translations, feel free to contact rights@cognella.com.

Social Media

We’ll post announcements about your book (its initial launch, reviews published in newspaper, journals, or magazines, etc.) to our Facebook (facebook.com/Cognella) and X (formerly Twitter) (@Cognella) accounts. To improve visibility of your title, we encourage you to interact with and share these posts.

Conferences

Cognella regularly hosts a booth at national conferences and displays titles that support the subject matter of the conference. You can view a list of the conferences Cognella plans to attend for the current calendar year at cognella.com/news-events.

If you are attending one of these conferences, please let us know! If we plan to display your book at a conference, we’ll let you know so that, if you plan to attend, you can stop by and help promote your title.

If you are attending a conference that is not listed on the Cognella News & Events page and there’s an opportunity to promote your book there, contact us. We’d be happy to provide you with copies of your book for the conference.

Book Exhibits

We do not send our titles to book exhibits or any other event where we, as your publisher, and you, as the author, are not in attendance. We’ve tried this promotional strategy in the past, and it has not yielded significant sales.

Print Flyers

Cognella can create print flyers for special events or marketing opportunities, including conferences, university events, etc. If you’d like to request print pieces, please contact the marketing team one month in advance of your event to allow time for consultation, development, design, and printing.
